BII - Industrial Research and Attachment Programme 2023

The Bioinformatics Institute (BII) was set up by the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) in July 2001; it was re-launched with a strong scientific program in 2007. Located in the Biopolis in Singapore, BII is conceived as the computational biology research and postgraduate training institute as well as a national resource centre in bioinformatics within the Biomedical Research Council (BMRC) of A*STAR.

The Bioinformatics Institute (BII) aims to understand the biomolecular mechanisms that underlie biomedical phenomena by developing sophisticated computational methods to support this discovery process from a secure and sustainable data hub to cross-disciplinary AI/ML analysis and data integration. We analyse a wide spectrum of biological and clinical data, including omics data (biomolecular sequences, expression profiles, epigenetics data), 3D structures of macromolecules, and biological tissue and macroscopic images from local and international academic, hospital and industry collaborators, public resources and from our own experiments. Our applied research diversifies into infectious diseases, computational toxicology, natural product research, precision medicine, cancer research, and drug discovery.

3 x SST Sec 2 students attended the IRAP programme at BII from 5 to 9 June 2023. They are Isaac Tan Hong Xi  (S2-01),  Lee Ting Xuan (S2-01), and Anbarasu Elavenil (S2-06).

As part of their learning, the 3 students produced a video to explain how the Scientific Method is related to Artificial Intelligence in the modern era:
