The Association of Science, Technology and Innovation (ASTI) is a non-governmental organization (NGO) and also non-profit oriented organization working towards empowering young children through various projects such as Science Fair for Young Children (SFYC), Young Inventors Challenge (YIC), Creative and Critical Thinking Camp (CCTC), ASTI Leap Challenge (ALC), Teacher Conference and ASTI outreach programmes. YIC requires teams of up to 5 members to put their minds together and come up with an invention. The purpose of the programme is to build and encourage the creative and inventive capability of young people.
Three SST students were accompanied by two teachers for this event. They are:
(a) Valerie Tan Fang Ting (S3-06)
(b) Kinjal Agarwal (S3-03)
(c) Oh Jun Rong (S3-03)
The students' reflections for the regional competition are as follows:
YIC has taught me that the world has a lot of people who are really passionate about math and science. At the competition, we saw a myriad of impressive projects done by participants from other countries. This taught me that we must not be complacent, as there is going to be someone out there who is trying to improve his/her craft. Thus, I have come to realisation that so long as you are passionate about your craft and you are willing to put in the time and effort into improving oneself, success will come to you eventually. After participating in the Young Inventors Challenge 2018, it taught me that success is not always a given, and we may fail at times despite putting hard work. I learnt to be resilient and work as a team to overcome challenges we faced such as the car's code crashing, etc. This experience taught me that we should not be easily overcome by setbacks and come back stronger the next time. I am very grateful for this eye opening experience, the wonderful memories and the new friends made. (Tan Fang Ting Valerie, S3-06)
After being able to get the opportunity of experiencing YIC, I have learnt that success does not come very easily. Although we might have put in a lot of effort, it is important for us to understand our competitors. I am very fortunate to be able to take part in this enriching and exciting competition which has not only taught me what it takes deserve success but also how to get back up when we encounter a failure. (Kinjal Agarwal, S3-03)
