International Science Youth Forum 2020

The 12th International Science Youth Forum (ISYF) @ Singapore was held from the 13th to 17th of January 2020. 

Held annually, ISYF brings together passionate young scientists from around the world in intellectual discourse and cultural exchange. This year, our theme “Evolving Aspirations: Divergent Pathways, Convergent Future” reflects the multi-faceted and ever-changing world of science that has forever transformed our way of living. With this in mind, through our masterclasses, dialogues and the ISYF Grand Ceremony, we hope to nurture inquiring minds to collaborate in diverse fields and create the future of science. 

With the turn of a new decade, ISYF strives to continue inspiring young individuals. In this chapter, delegates can expect to work together with like-minded peers and stretch their creativity to tackle issues of the modern age. Gathering delegates and educators from all over the world, this forum promises to be a meaningful and culturally enriching experience.

AIMS
Inspire Passion for Science Among Youth
ISYF aims to provide high-ability students with ample opportunities to share and discuss their interest in science and science research. They will be exposed to many fields of science which will broaden their outlook and understanding of the scientific world. Nobel Laureates and other eminent scientists will inspire them through stories of their own life experiences and scientific discoveries. These interactions are helpful for the youths especially when they are considering pursuing science as a meaningful and fulfilling endeavour.


Establish Cooperation and Friendship Amongst Young Science Talents
Students will have many opportunities to interact in different cross-cultural groups and form strong bonds with each other throughout the Forum. Activities are designed to promote mutual cooperation, understanding and appreciation of each other’s diverse culture yet sharing a common passion in science and research.


Build Capacities of Science Educators
Through professional sharing of best practices in the classroom and networking with fellow Science educators, the ISYF will serve as an important platform to build the competencies of the teachers. It will also serve as a valuable opportunity for schools to establish and develop close ties with one another and to explore the possibility of future collaborations.


Raise Singapore’s Profile as an International Hub for Science Education and Research
Participants will have first-hand experience of the educational and research & development scene in Singapore through the visits and interactions at our local Universities, Research Institutes and Industries. We will be able to showcase the best facilities and innovative capabilities that these institutions can offer.




From ISYF, i learnt more about how to do better research and experiments. i learnt that we must have the passion to drive us to do research and not just do it because everyone else is.  I enjoyed the team bonding games the most and hope to be able to see the people i have met in this forum again (Faith Mah, S3-08).

ISYF has taught me more about research and the need for passion in scientific endeavours, that failure is the mother of success, such that only if you persistently try results can be achieved. The strong friendships created by this event has also taught me that teammates are important in whatever you do, research or not. ISYF has allowed me to interact with many different types of people from different backgrounds and cultures. I also learnt more about research, scientific endeavours, and how to handle failure. I also had the opportunity to interact with noble prize winners such as Sir Tim Hunt and was able to learn more about the struggles of a scientist and how did they overcome their failure. I learnt to be more open-minded and be curious. I was also able to learn more about different countries and their culture (Shaun Max, S3-03).
