The Think BIG, Youth Science Ambassador Programme is organised by the Science Centre Singapore and supported by the Amazon Web Services and Temasek Foundation who sponsored the training programme.
The YSAP demonstrates the Science Centre Singapore’s commitment to the Youth Science Movement, on the advancement of science, by enhancing knowledge and developing skills in various fields, including science and technology, engineering and mathematics. This programme was launched in 2019 and was offered to secondary school students. Under the programme, students were trained and mentored to work on a community project over a period of 2 months from October to November 2020.
The initial training and development take place in the Science Centre. Students will be mentored through a series of programme that includes:
(a) Project research skills
(b) Techniques for oral presentation and science communication.
The programme culminates in a project presentation. After which, students will apply their skills outside Science Centre Singapore, and into homes, schools and community spaces in Singapore, where the public will be invited to listen. The youth ambassadors are expected to use their skills back on school or in community programmes.
Benefits of enrolment
Through the programme, the youth ambassadors will develop and grow the following skills and values:
1. Increasing their interest and knowledge in a variety of STEM topics.
2. Ability to interact effectively and communicate science concepts to a range of visitors.
3. Ability to take an inclusive, welcoming approach and develop relevant social skills.
4. Sharing their passion for science.
5. Being positive role models for their peers and younger students in your school.
Selection of youths
The Youths were selected based on the following criteria:
1. 14 years and above
2. Motivated to learn and try new things
3. Responsible for self and others
4. Passionate and generous about sharing
5. Able to commit at least 50 hours of service
6. Able to attend the above training and mentoring sessions
SST was represented by the following students:
(a) Lam Ke Xin (S2-02)
(b) Kitti-Ampon Chia De En (S2-07)
(c) Karthikeyan Aakarsha Kannan (S2-07)
(d) Akila Rajesh (S2-08)
(e) Lewis Lim Tiong Teck (S2-08)
Besides that, Lam Ke Xin (S2-02) also won the Amazon Future Engineer Bursary Award.
Due to Covid-19 safe distancing measures, Ke Xin represented the school on 5 Feb 2021 to collect the certificates on behalf of her team.
The student created a IoT project as part of the community outreach programme.
