YIC is inviting teams of up to 4-5 members to put their minds together and come up with an invention. The purpose of the programme is to build and encourage the creative and inventive capability of young people. We started this programme in 2013 as a pilot where 12 teams participated from 12 schools and the response have been remarkable ever since - we have been growing almost exponentially with over 150 shortlisted teams participating every year.
As the organiser of the YIC, ASTI (Association of Science Technology and Innovation), is deeply concerned with the outbreak of COVID-19 in 2020, hence we had introduced Young Inventors Challenge Special Edition which was conducted online through Invention Pitch Video and Project Report Submission. We had received a total of 357 applications of which 146 teams submitted proposals with a wide range of ideas related to the theme from Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore, Brunei, Philippines and India. We then shortlisted 115 teams to participate in the final competition via Invention Pitch Video and Project Report submission. Top 20 teams were selected for Online Viva session through Zoom and finally on the 5th of December 2020, we announced the winners consisting of the platinum, gold, silver and bronze categories via virtual prize giving ceremony, through a Facebook Live session.
The Objective of YIC 2021 is to continuously help develop new generations of inventors/innovators for the future and also to give an opportunity to young and future inventors/innovators to develop and showcase their inventions/innovations prototypes. Moreover YIC also helps young inventors/innovators to experience the inventive cycle, from conceptualisation to product/prototype with an appreciation of cost and market factors. YIC encourage young minds to use inventions/innovations as a tool to make a sustainable change in the society. YIC also gives opportunities to young people who are inventive to promote their ideas to the outside world.
Secondary school students aged 13-17 years of old are eligible to participate with a team of 4-5 members. The registration deadline is on the 2 March 2021. The team should be able to write an invention proposal and submit for review and shortlisting by 5 April 2021. After several months of brainstorming, construction, reporting and judging, the final result was eventually announced on the 20 Nov 2021.
This year's YIC theme is; Invention to address issues discussed in Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The teams are required to invent a product and/ or process that is able to provide resolution to a certain level and have an impact on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The teams are required to innovate and produce a working prototype and/ or a working scaled model. A report and pitch video is also required with the aim to commercialise or to put in practice the invention.
For the year 2021, a total of 352 teams around ASEAN countries participated in the competition. Only 150 teams were shortlisted for the finals eventually. More details about the competition can be found here: https://www.asti.org.my/yic2021/
SST submitted a total of 4 teams and 2 teams were shortlisted for the finals.
