BSS-SST STUDENT EXCHANGE PROGRAMME (2024 – 2025)

1. Introduction

The partnership between the School of Science and Technology, Singapore (SST) and Busan Science High School (BSS) continues to serve as a cornerstone of the Science Talent Development Programme (TDP). This reciprocal exchange aims to foster scientific collaboration, cross-cultural understanding, and global citizenship through hands-on research and personal immersion.

2. Phase 1: SST Visit to Busan (July 2024)

In July 2024, a delegation of ten Secondary 3 students traveled to Busan, South Korea, for a multi-faceted learning experience.

  • Academic Collaboration: The Ocean ICT Project Building on the success of previous years, students collaborated on the Ocean ICT Project. This initiative integrates Information and Communication Technology with marine science. Students engaged in research and programming to address environmental challenges, such as monitoring pH levels for marine life and studying the ecological impact of coastal infrastructure.

  • Scientific Immersion Participants attended specialized lessons and workshops at BSS, gaining exposure to South Korea’s advanced science pedagogy. The itinerary included visits to prestigious local institutions, such as the Busan National Science Museum and university laboratories, where students explored topics ranging from androgen synthesis to renewable energy (rotor sail ship technology).

  • Cultural Exchange & Homestay A highlight of the trip was a two-day homestay. Living with BSS families allowed SST students to experience authentic Korean daily life, traditions, and cuisine, forging bonds that extended beyond the classroom.

3. Phase 2: BSS Visit to Singapore (January 2025)

The exchange came full circle when the BSS delegation—comprising the same student buddies and five educators—visited SST from 22 to 24 January 2025.

  • School Integration The BSS visitors were immersed in the SST environment through comprehensive school tours and participation in Co-Curricular Activities (CCA). This allowed the Korean students to experience Singapore’s unique "applied learning" approach firsthand.

  • Project Culmination The visit served as the final stage for the Ocean ICT Project. Mixed teams of SST and BSS students presented their research findings and prototypes, demonstrating their ability to collaborate across borders to solve complex global issues.

  • Strengthening Ties The visit concluded with a reciprocal homestay in Singapore. By hosting their buddies, SST students were able to return the hospitality they received in Busan, further solidifying lifelong friendships and broadening their perspectives on global citizenship.

4. Conclusion

The 2024–2025 SST-BSS exchange successfully achieved its goals of academic excellence and cultural diplomacy. By working together on the Ocean ICT Project and sharing their homes, students from both nations developed the 21st-century competencies—specifically collaboration and cross-cultural intelligence—necessary to thrive in an interconnected world.
