The “Astronaut Al Worden Endeavour Space Camp Challenge 2020”'s objective is to inspire our students and encourage them in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics subjects.
The prize for this Challenge is a sponsored trip to attend the International Space Camp program taking place in Huntsville, Alabama, USA from 16 to 21 August 2020 for four students and a teacher/chaperone.
The task scenario is as follows:
The year is 2120 and we are about to embark on a mission of an astronomical scale: Sending mankind to Titan.
Located 1.2 million kilometres away from Saturn, Titan is the planet’s largest moon and the second largest in our solar system. It is an icy world with a surface that is largely made up of methane and ammonia ice. Titan also has a dense atmosphere that is made up of nitrogen (98.4%), methane (1.4%) and hydrogen (0.2%). Besides Earth, Titan is the only place known to have liquids in the form of rivers, lakes and seas on its surface although these bodies of liquid are largely made up of methane and ethane. However, about 100 kilometres beneath Titan’s thick crust of ice is an ocean possibly made of water. Along Titan’s equator are dark dunes containing a volume of organics several hundred times larger than Earth’s coal reserves. Your objective is to explore possible developments on Titan and propose a plan that will |
allow it to sustain human life.
Are you prepared to take on this challenge? Do you have what it takes to bring this planet-like moon to life? Suggested Proposal Considerations:
The result of this challenge is given out on the 12th Feb 2020 at the Singapore Air Show. Although the teams did not win any prizes, their proposals in the form of videos were impressive.
