Engineering Innovation Challenge 2021

Organised by The Institution of Engineers, Singapore (IES), the National Engineers Day (NED) is an annual event that aims to celebrate the achievements of engineers, inspire young engineers and intrigue students in engineering.

Since launching NED in 2010, IES has partnered with tertiary institutions, government agencies, engineering organisations and industry experts, to grow it into one of the biggest engineering events for students in Singapore.

The Engineering Innovation Challenge (EIC) is a competition jointly organised by The Institution of Engineers, Singapore (IES) and the Science Centre Singapore (SCS), with support from the Ministry of Education (MOE) and the Singapore Nuclear Research and Safety Initiative (SNRSI).

EIC was previously known as the Energy Innovation Challenge, a competition launched in 2015 with funding support until 2018. On 9 Jan 2019, the steering committee decided to adopt the acronym ‘EIC’ for the Engineering Innovation Challenge 2019. The aim is to build upon the proven framework used by past editions of the competition to drive greater success.

2021 marks the seventh year of the competition, with the theme “Radiation 360°”.This year’s challenge will once again present students in secondary schools, junior colleges, the Institute of Technical Education (ITE), polytechnics and universities a unique opportunity to not only participate in an engineering competition, but also to embark on an insightful learning journey to discover the spirit of innovation, build new technical skills in prototyping and product development, and develop presentation and collaboration skills under the mentorship of practising engineers.

SST participated in the EIC and achieved the following awards in the past:
2016 - 3rd: Wind Turbine
2017 - 2nd: Carbon Helix Project
2019 - 1st: Development of a Photovoltaic Blue Light Delivery System for the Growth of Corals
2020 - 2nd: Investigation on how the amount of ionising radiation affects the growth rate of Vigna Radiata

For 2021, 4 teams of SST students participated in the competition and two teams achieved merit awards:
