International Science Youth Forum 2021 (ONLINE)

13th International Science Youth Forum Digital @ Singapore (ISYFdigital 2021)

The International Science Youth Forum (ISYF) is a prestigious science enrichment programme for top research students from all over the globe, hosted by Hwa Chong Institution. This year, the ISYF Student Organising Committee comprises all the members of the school’s Students’ Science Research Club (SSRC). The delegates of ISYF will gain the opportunity to participate in a multitude of exciting and meaningful activities, which include intellectual discourse with eminent scientists, technopreneurs, medical professionals and government officers who utilise technology and big data to make decisions, as well as networking with peers through collaborative projects and cultural sharing.

The following are the key objectives for the 2021 online Forum:

a. Inspire Passion for Science Research amongst Youth.  ISYF aims to provide high-ability students with ample opportunities to share and discuss their interest in science and science research. They will be exposed to many fields of science which will broaden their outlook and understanding of the scientific world. Eminent scientists will inspire them through stories of their own life experiences and scientific discoveries. These interactions are helpful for the youths especially when they are considering pursuing science as a meaningful and fulfilling endeavour.

b. Establish Co-operation and Friendship amongst Young Science Talents.  Students will have many opportunities to interact in different cross-cultural groups and form strong bonds with each other throughout the Forum. Activities are designed to promote mutual cooperation, understanding and appreciation of each other’s diverse culture yet sharing a common passion in science and research.

The programme included
(a) Keynote address by Nobel Laureate
(b) Interaction with Eminent Scientists
(c) Research Poster Showcase and Research Sharing
(d)Team Project Challenge
(e) Social Programme

SST is represented by the following 3 students:
(a) Ong Zhi Xuan (S3-01)
(b) Ysabelle Wong Sze Han (S3-04)
(c) Tay Shao Yang Joel (S3-04)

The following are their reflections after the event:

Throughout the event, I managed to listen to a few scientists sharing their work and telling us more about their expertise in a particular field of work. The two talks I managed to attend were related to computing, material science and physics. I was also provided with the opportunity to listen to a Nobel laureate answering the audience's questions. This gave me more insights and allowed me to better understand how they think. Besides, I was also given an opportunity to work with group members overseas or from other schools, in a project and quiz. I have also learnt a few facts through some experiment demonstrations using mundane objects. This event was overall a unique and fun experience for me (Ong Zhi Xuan, S3-01).

At ISYF, I gained a much deeper understanding of scientific concepts new and old and the sharing from the different scientists have inspired me to be more passionate about science. However, I think the biggest takeaway I have is the friendships that I have formed with students from other schools and even from other countries. ISYF has really inspired me to be passionate about science and has helped me expand my connections around the globe (Ysabelle Wong Sze Han, S3-04).

Throughout the entire event, I worked hard, bonded with my group mates but most importantly, had fun. The biggest takeaway I had from the event is that science is an amazing yet huge field, and the things I have learnt so far have barely scratched the surface. ISYF really was an eye-opener for me, as I got to work with students with different fields of interest to come together to create a solution and a video. I would definitely recommend others to join this event. I thoroughly enjoyed it and look forward to participating in similar events in the future (Tay Shao Yang Joel, S3-04).
