Japan Hyper-Interdisciplinary Conference (2-3 March 2018)

The Hyper-Interdisciplinary Conference in Tokyo is where various professionals gather to share/discuss the wicked problems they are trying to solve. Scientists, engineers, artisans from factories, entrepreneurs, and business person, all are welcome to join. The cutting edge researchers, entrepreneurs of the Real-Tech startups gather in Tokyo to generate a novel knowledge-based paradigm. The guests from Silicon Valley, London, Philippines, and Singapore will be there to spice up the discussion. This event is sponsored by Leave-a-nest Pte Ltd, Singapore for the two students who won the Science Castle Competition in March 2017.

Chloe Wong (S3-04) and Khrisha (S3-03), together with SST teacher Ms Karen Teo and Ms Tan Lui Chen, went on the trip from 1 to 4 March 2018 to Tokyo, Japan to attend this conference. On the first day of the conference, they attended the HIC. On the second day, they attended a workshop organised for all the winners in the various Science Castle Competitions in 2017. The students from Japan, Singapore and Malaysia shared their research findings to each other and engaged in a friendly discussion about research.

This two day conference has been a unique and meaningful experience for me. I was not only able to see many potential world changing products and also how professionals advertise them. I was also able to see him an other interesting research projects from other countries and also got the chance to interact with those students. I felt privileged to have been able to attend such an event and represent Singapore to meet other excellent researchers around my age. Because of this, I am confident that many more life changing discoveries will be unveiled and proven in the future with he help of such innovators and researchers (Chloe Wong, S3-04).

This two days trip to Japan was really useful for me. On the first day of the conference we got an opportunity to listen to the pitch from different start ups. All their products and service was something really different and new to us. One of the products that captured my attendtion was Dropplet. This product helps inject drugs without the use of injections or cream. I felt that this product was very relatable as I my uncle has diabetes and has to inject insulin everyday and I think that this product would make it easier and painless. Overall I was able to listen to professional pitch and learnt more about the new products. On the second day, I was slightly nervous and worried as I felt unprepared. Practice session started off the second day conference. Hearing all their projects which was more advance and interesting made me even more nervous. But on top of this we were able to learn more about the topics as well as their interest in biology. After the practice session we had lunch together with the professors which provided an opportunity to learn about their culture. Overall, through this conference I was able to learn new things and I hope that I would be able to participate in more conferences and also continue working on our project (Khrisha, S3-03).
